GILUBONG ANG AKONG PUSOD SA DAGAT
WINNER ATENEO ART AWARDS 2012
A multimedia community-based artwork
by Martha Atienza (PH/NL)
This piece of Filipino-Dutch artist, Martha Atienza, was more than just a 20-minute expanded cinema piece exhibited in a 3-channel format. It was a monumental attempt to use the artist’s practice and process to affect the social fabric of the small fishing island of Bantayan, Atienza’s hometown. The film work shows experiences of local seafarers and compressor diver fishermen.
Atienza organized a 5-day festival on the Filipino fisherman's island, Bantayan, where she spent most of her childhood and where the project was filmed. The exhibit was accompanied by group therapy sessions, involving the fishermen and their families, in an attempt to help them openly discuss the toll the sea takes on their interpersonal relationships and their environment. This event was funded by The OCD and held on August 17-23, 2011.
